Mondays are often our “free days” around here… no school, no evening activities, and usually nothing planned… so we try to take advantage of this and go on some outings from time to time. Today was one of those free days (and even Sky is out of town for work) so we visited our friends who live in rural Riley, IL and had a fun morning of playing inside and out. Dayten and Averhy sang songs for us (several well-known, others composed on-the-spot), Eden and Addi danced to the music, and we even played outside for a bit. But most importantly… we made snickerdoodles!! As you can tell by the many looks of anticipation (as well as Dayten’s crumb-covered mouth and vacant full-tummy stare) the process was a success from start to finish. Thanks for letting us come over and take over your house for a while today Jodi!!
snickerdoodles and friends

March 9, 2009 - 11:09 pm - I love Eden's little hairdo - so cute!
birthday fun at the aquarium
Last week we took the girls to the Shedd Aquarium for Averhy’s 5th birthday – and we all had a great time! Here Eden is peeking at some fish (although her favorite part of the trip was the 3D movie, and lunch of course) and Averhy is listening to a aquarium employee teach about painted turtles. Her favorite parts were the giant spider crabs and the seahorses. Melanie was able to join us for the morning, and then after lunch and the 3D movie we visited Amanda at her apartment in the city. Her roommate Brendan gave Averhy some quarters for her birthday present, and Amanda gave Eden some pennies for her belated birthday (both of the girls were thrilled! Averhy has plans to save up her quarters for a Barbie.) Then back to Grandma and Grandpa’s house to pick them up and go meet Mema at Chuck E. Cheese for supper!! The girls had a good time there as well – and the grown-ups did too! Then back to the farm for cake and ice cream and gifts before sending the girls down to Morris for the week while Sky and Allyson took a quick vacation to Vermont. All in all, a fun time!!
March 14, 2009 - 3:48 pm - i know what beats a blowpop, a ring pop! which i, being the cool aunt, gave to each of the girls.
March 5, 2009 - 1:33 am - um. . . i would like to let it be known that i also gave averhy a blowpop. nothing beats a blowpop.
fun with play-do
The girls and I had a busy morning today… lots of play-do creations (tiaras and a necklace pictured here, but also spaghetti, babies, snakes, and cut-out-shapes) after a trip to the doctor’s office (yep, the 3rd time in less than 3 weeks). Averhy just hasn’t been hearing right since finishing her meds for an ear infection last week. Usually she can hear you whisper from the other side of the room, but since Saturday she’s been saying “what?” or just giving us a blank stare unless we practically shout… so back to the doctor, who said yep – lots of fluid and gunk in both ears, so now she gets to take the heavy-duty $71 orange-flavored meds for the next 10 days. She’s bummed it’s not bubble-gum flavored again. I’m bummed we dropped our Rx coverage last year…
February 19, 2009 - 10:58 pm - three princesses :)
can hardly believe she’s two…
February 14, 2009 - 10:39 am - what a sweetheart! wasn't that long ago I was holding your hand...
25 Things about Eden
1. Eden has a very specific bedtime routine: 1) rock and sing “I see the moon and the moon sees me…” song, 2) rock and sing “rock-a-bye baby” with “ch-ch” inserted after “the cradle will rock”, 3) lie down in bed with her blankie, puppy on one side, baby on the other side, Ariel in one hand, Sleeping Beauty in the other hand, and little green blankie on top of it all, 4) hugs and kisses for Mommy, 5) hugs and kisses for Daddy, 6) roll over and say “ni-night. bye-bye.” If she wakes up in the middle of the night, all steps must be repeated in order for her to fall asleep again.
2. She is an intermittantly picky eater. One day she’ll love pizza, the next day she’ll refuse it. Unfortunately, most days she will fall into the picky category.
3. Sky’s interpretation of #2 is that Eden likes to eat breakfast and lunch, but not supper. It’s true that the picky-ness rears it’s head more often at the supper table, but it’s also true that we never have mac & cheese with hot dogs for supper…
4. Eden is stringing together lots of sentences now, but they all come out one word at a time. For example: Daddy! home. watch. movie. sit. (It’s pretty cute to listen to!)
5. Because Eden goes with me to take Averhy to school, she is excited about school for herself. She likes going to her “class” at church for Parents’ Morning Out, Sunday School, and even the kids play room at the gym!
6. Eden pronounces “Dora and Boots” as “DoyaBoot”
7. If she wants you to sing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”, she’ll say “up-up-up” (as in “up above”…)
8. Her favorite cereal right now is Raisin Bran Crunch… but she calls it “up-up-up see-yul”… because there’s a sun on the box that must look like a star to her (see #7).
9. Eden loves anything and everything princess. Actually, in the pictures above, she said she was wearing a princess hat (maybe because it’s pink!) She loves dressing up and dancing around and wearing high heels… the whole 9 yards!
10. Eden adores Averhy… and repeats almost everything that Averhy does or says! It can be rather amusing, especially at the dinner table.
11. She is also a very caring and sympathetic girl – if she hears someone cry or even say “ouch”, she becomes very concerned.
12. Sometimes Eden chooses to pray before a meal, and she always prays for Meme, Papa, Grandma, Grandpa, and sometimes Grandad too!
13. Eden is getting very good at puzzles. She has a few 24-piece Sesame Street puzzles that she can almost put together all by herself!
14. She enjoys watching Sesame Street and can identify most of the characters.
15. She knows all of her colors, most of the time. The only one that’s a bit iffy is orange.
16. Eden is an Illini fan! Although she can’t yet sing the Alma Mater, she can say I-L-L I-N-I and cheers “go football!”
17. She is learning to count… with prompting she can count to 13, but on her own it’s more like: 1, 2, 8, 9, 1, 2, 3, 8, 9…
18. If you ask her “How are you Eden?” she’ll say “Two!” and hold up each index finger to show you!
19. Eden still pronounces “princess” as “wah-whass.”
20. Like her big sister, she really enjoys the movie “Enchanted” and often requests to listen to “happy song” (Happy Working Song) or “wah-whass noooo” (That’s How You Know).
21. We’re starting to work on potty training, but on Wednesday, she peed on the potty twice!!!
22. She is usually pretty patient with me taking lots and lots of pictures of her. Usually…
23. Eden is a great helper – she can throw away her trash, she likes helping with laundry, and will help pick up her toys.
24. Eden loves wrestling… mostly with Sky, but if Averhy is just sitting on the floor, sometimes Eden takes that as an invitation to wrestle!
25. I love the way that she plays with my hair and my face while we’re doing the entire routine in #1… it’s a great end to a day!
February 3, 2009 - 5:11 pm - thank you for sharing these wonderful things about our favorite girls. i especially loved averhy having to tell you it's ok to get up if you have to puke, and eden attacking averhy to wrestle on the floor.
February 3, 2009 - 9:52 am - Thank you, sweet Eden for your prayers.
February 2, 2009 - 8:10 pm - In response to #10 - I love this! Taylor absolutely adores Austin and always has, too. She wants to do everything he does! They are cute to watch. I can't imagine only having one child - watching the love between two of your children is so amazing.
25 Things about Averhy
Even though the “25 Things” is something that I usually wouldn’t do, I’ve learned a lot about my friends on Facebook that I wouldn’t have known otherwise… and since this blog is my scrapbook for the girls, I thought I’d write down 25 things about each of them right now, that I want to remember forever! So here are Averhy’s 25 things:
1. She is learning to read and write! Her handwriting is pretty good, and she can sound out lots of simple words with occasional help – but only when she asks for it.
2. Averhy usually wakes up once every night, usually with a bad dream. She doesn’t have night terrors as much anymore, but still bad dreams that require some consoling.
3. She loves her preschool class at Judah Christian, and this week was her “All About Me” week. Unfortunately, she was sick today and missed the last day of her special week. I don’t think she noticed though!
4. She enjoys playing games on the computer, especially nickjr.com and occasionally pbskids.org.
5. We just finished reading Roald Dahl’s “The Witches” – thanks Amanda! – and she really liked it. Now we’re reading “The BFG”.
6. Averhy has an amazing memory for music. We listen to the soundtrack of “Enchanted” often in the car, and she can identify which instrumental part of the CD goes with which part of the movie.
7. She is still a really good eater, but still does not like raw tomatoes (or large chunks of cooked tomatoes in chili, spaghetti, etc.).
8. If you ask, her favorite color is usually “all the colors of the rainbow”, although last week she said “silver”.
9. Averhy generally does a GREAT job of getting along with Eden and being patient with her little sister. I’m so thankful for this.
10. She has always struggled with staying in bed at bedtime. A few weeks ago, she came out of her room after we put her to bed, just to clarify with us that “It’s okay to get out of bed if I have to go potty, OR if I have to throw up.”
11. She really doesn’t mind throwing up when she’s sick, probably because whenever she gets sick, she usually throws up… but she’s such a good patient when she is sick!
12. A week ago, she was playing in the basement and spinning herself around in a chair… so much so, that she came upstairs and threw up about 15 minutes later! Ugh!
13. Averhy’s best friends are Lizzie and Addi. She plays really well with each of them, but when all three get together, it doesn’t go quite so smoothly!
14. Once a week, Averhy and Eden go to Addi’s house for the afternoon (while I work) – I think this has been great for them!
15. Averhy likes picking out her own clothes, and humors me when I require her to wear matching clothes if we’re going out in public… but she prefers wearing mismatched clothes (or dress-ups) around the house.
16. Until recently, she was VERY picky about how her pants would feel – jeans were totally out of the picture. (Now she likes her jeans, thank goodness!)
17. She has always been particular about how her socks feel on her feet… she can easily be brought to tears in frustration if her socks “aren’t right”.
18. She says “band-aige” instead of “bandaid”.
19. She says “Inurbana” instead of “Urbana”.
20. She sings almost constantly, including songs she has heard and “original compositions”.
21. She likes being barefoot all the time – just like her dad.
22. When she’s concentrating really hard, she scrunches her lips – just like her dad.
23. Averhy wants to be a character at Disney World when she is older – so much so that she was crying because all the princesses are already at Disney World, and they’d have to make up a new princess character for her and she didn’t think they’d do that… (I explained how it works, and now she’s okay with it, especially if her aunt Meri can pull some strings…)
24. She is totally a girlie-girl… dress-up, music, princesses, the works…
25. Unfortunately, at this point she’s not the most athletic kid – just like her mom!
February 1, 2009 - 5:36 pm - #20 Her compositions are especially creative when she is on the potty.
January 30, 2009 - 8:21 pm - make her do ballet. make her do ballet!
