perfect model | chicago headshot photographer

First of all, thanks to everyone who entered the “I’d like to introduce” giveaway last week — Anne Carlson certainly appreciates your support and hopes to see many of you at her open house on Sunday, March 28 from 1-4pm at 10 Litchfield Lane in Champaign!!  The two lucky winners of the lovely Aspire necklace were Tami and Jeannine — thanks for spreading the word about Sweet Pea Photography!!  Anne will be contacting you soon!

Today — a quick peek at some headshots I did a few weeks ago for this perfect little model up in the Chicago area.  She is such a sweetie, and her eyes are just to die for!  If you are in need of some headshots (for your child or yourself) just fill out the contact form above and I’ll get in touch with you soon — I’m planning on doing a “Headshot Day” up in the Chicago area later this spring, and I’d love to work with you!

and baby makes five | chicago newborn photographer

I know, I know… today is supposed to be a “develop on fridays” day… but at the special request of some wonderful clients, this is an early sneak peek instead!  (How do these clients have so much influence, you ask?  Well, they’re fans of Sweet Pea Photography on Facebook, and they pestered until I gave in simply asked nicely!)  Anyway…

I have had the privilege of photographing this family over the past 4 or so years, and it has been such a joy watching them grow, change, and love each other more each time I see them.  When they moved to Chicago last year, I was so sad to see them leave Champaign-Urbana — but I’m glad that Chicago is easily within driving distance so I can still hang out with them every once in a while!!  One of the things I love most about their family photography sessions is that they are so relaxed and laid back, and simply continue living their lives while I document their relationships with each other.  True lifestyle photography sessions are such a neat experience, and I appreciate that this family allows me to stretch my creative muscles each time that I see them.  These are just a few of my favorite images from their session last week…

i’d like to introduce… Anne Carlson of Doncaster… and a giveaway! | champaign family photographer

Welcome to the second installment of “I’d like to introduce…” where we get to see another side of Sweet Pea Photography clients!  This month I’d like to introduce Anne Carlson, with whom I’ve had the privilege of working several times — first, for a session with her twin boys, and more recently a session with her lovely mother!  Just to reminisce, here’s one of my favorite shots of one of her fun kiddos, as well as her wonderful mom!  Anne recently started a new business venture as a wardrobe consultant for Doncaster. Doncaster is a company that has been around for about 80 years, and is family owned and operated out of North Carolina.  Anne will be selling, servicing, and consulting with clients out of her home, and is excited about the Spring/Summer show March 29th – April 3rd, with a special early OPEN HOUSE on Sunday, March 28 from 1-4pm at her home (10 Litchfield Lane, Champaign).  Feel free to give Anne a call at 217.607.0676 or stop on by!!

1) Tell us a little about you and your family…

I am a 42-year old wife and working mother.  My husband Jeff and I have been married for almost 10 years and have 4 year old twin boys–Rhett and Nash.  I consider myself sort of a renaissance woman, having had a few “lives”–I worked in couture and women’s designer clothing, I also worked in the corporate world, and in my last “life” I have had an interior design business which has serviced both residential and commercial clients.  I have a broad range of interests, but I am an aesthetic at heart.  All things visual–fashion, home, gardening.

2) What excites you most about this business venture and/or working out of your home?

Fashion is my true Passion and I love to help people.  I am excited about the opportunity to be able to do what I love, working with such a beautiful clothing collection in Doncaster, while staying home with my children and being there to experience life with them.  I have found that Doncaster’s quality appeals to my appreciation for true craftsmanship and beautiful textiles.  I will be able to work with clients through seasonal truck shows out of my home, in a “salon-style” environment.  This will allow me get to know clients, one-on-one, and really help them plan their wardrobes, get the proper fit and avoid the ” closet full of clothes with nothing to wear-syndrome”. I will be including alterations as a part of my service, to provide close-to-custom clothing.  My business is highly service-oriented and I can meet women in between shows to go through their closets, access needs/fit/lifestyle, and help them make appropriate selections via the Doncaster web site and/or my look book and fabric swatches.

3) How did you first become interested in fashion and/or design?

I have loved fashion and design ever since I can remember, sewing for the first time to complete my Girl Scouts sewing badge.  I sewed many of my clothes growing up, including my prom dress, my wedding dress, and bridesmaids dresses.  I spent hours pouring over fashion magazines (still probably my biggest vice–my basement is full of magazines!) as well as spending hours in the art studio creating ( One of my majors was studio art).  I did an internship during my Junior Year of college in London at Liberty of London’s textile design studio.  I have been “hooked” for a long time.  It has always appealed to my creative soul.

4) What do you enjoy most about being a mom?

I enjoy watching my kids discover and experience things, particularly when you see them experience something that resonates with WHO they are. The true joy and excitement of that–it’s amazing.

5) You have a great fashion sense… can you share a few helpful fashion tips for moms on-the-go?

GET A SHOWER!!!  Seriously, that seems like a a given, but most women put themselves last.  Self-care is so important.  And simplify–have a great signature accessory (necklace, bracelet, lip color) that makes you feel pulled together, even in your “uniform”.  Finally, having a great handbag that goes with everything, is “stocked” with your essentials, makes life so much easier.  As you can tell, I’m very much about practicality–it is possible to be fashionable and functional at the same time.

6) Describe a day in your life – how do you balance kids and work?

I am still working towards a “healthy” daily routine–haven’t fit in exercise very consistently yet.  Nash usually wakes me @ 6:30.  He and I have “our time” with cartoons and milk and coffee, before Rhett wakes about 7:00. Rhett likes to play before breakfast, so we eat and get dressed in a very compressed period of about 15 minutes from 8:30-8:45 before heading out the door for preschool. I try to get a shower in there, unload the dishwasher, put a load of laundry in, make and pack my husband’s breakfast and lunch, and check emails.

Oh the ever-elusive balance.  I’m not sure I have that balance yet. I do more laundry while the kids are in school, clean the house, grocery shop, work on my business, and then it’s off to pick up the kids at noon.  Make lunch, have some down time with cartoons, then play/read/draw with the kids during the afternoon.  In the mean time, try to do more laundry (there is a consistent theme!), think about what to make for dinner by 5:30. I usually crash into bed by 9:00, read/watch a little TV and lights out by 10:00.

One of the reasons this format of a business was so appealing, was because the really busy times are packed into weeks around the trunk shows, which I felt would be more manageable than an unpredictable business.  As the shows approach, I’m spending more time doing invitations, calling clients to set up appointments, preparing my home to set up the collection, learning about the new collection’s fabrications, fit nuances, and trends in the market to be able to service and inform my clients.  So, a few weeks a season, life at home gets crazy. During the show weeks, most of my home responsibilities fall by the wayside, so I can focus.  I play catch up for a few weeks afterwards.

I feel the critical factor of balance is getting some time with your spouse and friends. Those have to be scheduled or they will never happen.  Those get-togethers feed my soul so that I can function better in my role as a working mom.

7) I know that your faith is important to you. What Bible verse is your favorite, and why?

Being Catholic, we are not really known to be very good at reciting Bible verses.  However, what comes to mind first is “Be not afraid.”  Life throws a lot at us and it can be very overwhelming at times.  I take comfort in that– I am not alone in facing all that life does present, and now look at new challenges as just that, new challenges. I am comforted by the fact that God is with me and has a plan for me and I try to use my experience and talents to live life day to day.

develop on fridays :: week 5 | champaign-urbana photographer

This week’s challenge was to keep things SIMPLE, mainly because (as Jefra puts it) “…a photograph is a 3 second piece of communicative artwork — You have just a few seconds to capture the attention of a viewer and speak to them.”  She highlights four simple ways to keep images simple — through composition, color or b&w (I love her comment that sometimes images just “read faster” in one way or another. I think that is so true, and I’ve always struggled to put this into words.  She did it for me! Thanks Jefra!), moving in or out, and watching out for extra junk in the frame that distracts from the image you want to communicate.  So… here are my attempts for this week.  I’m not thrilled with them actually, but they’ll have to do for now!

First — moving in closer to make a simpler image…. this is something I find myself doing quite often.

week5_1

Second — I used some super-saturated colors (I’m tired of the brown grass and gray skies around here, so I’ll add any extra color to my day that I can!!) and I also tried to get rid of the extra junk in the frame (the other kiddo in the background, the edge of the swingset)… but actually I think I like the first image better!  It just has more life or motion or something I can’t quite put my finger on…

week5_2So, what do you think? Which one do you like best and why? Let me know in the comments section below…

Oh, and be sure to check back on Monday for another installment of “I’d like to introduce…” and an AWESOME GIVEAWAY!!  Have a great weekend!

March 5, 2010 - 10:03 am Carla - The first set I like the middle one best because it is up close but shows her hair. It takes the extra stuff out. I think the last one is too close - I like seeing her strand of hair. The second set is hard to choose.....the girl in the background is extra "stuff", but the wider image allows us to see the sun glistening on the grass and the sun shining in the wider range picture is lovely. I think it would be my favorite if the girl in the background could be removed......I just think the second image is a great shot - fun, fun, fun! :) Looking forward to next week! :)

March 5, 2010 - 10:04 am Carla - I am living creatively through you. ;)

March 5, 2010 - 11:46 pm Allyson - Thanks for the thoughts Carla! I'm glad you're following this little project each week!

March 8, 2010 - 4:18 pm Leila - I like the middle one and then the first one. I think it is the sun flare I like so much in the first one and the scene is more complete to me being pulled back a little. If it were my own kid I would not like the other kid being in there, but since they are both neutral people to me I don't mind seeing the other little girl also.

tiptoes | champaign children’s photographer

champaign_photographer030310 Last weekend I had a fun first birthday Sweet Pea Photography session with this cutie pie and her lovely family.  Even though she wasn’t thrilled with the cake (more afraid than enamored, unfortunately), her big sister was ready and willing to help eat it to make sure it didn’t go to waste after all the hard work her mom put into baking it!  We made sure to take advantage of one of the up-sides of getting messy with frosting… a bubble bath!  I just love these little feet… and after splashing in the water a bit, she was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed once again.  Thanks for letting me come over to play, and I hope you enjoy this sneak peek — and remember to leave a comment for this birthday girl, so I can gift her a 5×7 print after 25 comments here on the blog!

daddy’s boy | fisher family photographer

fisher_photographer_030110I had a great time playing with this little guy and his family a few weekends ago at their new home in Fisher, and let me assure you — he is all boy!! He barely stopped moving during the entire session, and the only time he did want to sit still was on his daddy’s lap.  What a sweet little guy (and I think his eyes are even more blue than at his last Sweet Pea Photography session — is that even possible?!).  Thanks for a fun time of running, drumming, reading, and laughing – and I hope you enjoy this sneak peek from your session.  Remember to leave a comment here on the blog, because after 25 comments I’ll gift a 5×7 to this future rock star!

develop on fridays :: week 4+ | champaign-urbana photographer

As I mentioned last week, the official develop: on fridays group is now posting assignments every other week, so on the “off-weeks” I’m making up my own bonus assignments to keep the creative juices flowing!  And who knows… maybe I’ll even think up something that “officially” gets assigned later on – and then I’ll have my homework done early, right? Maybe…

So, the assignment for week 4+  :  continue looking at mundane objects in interesting ways… specifically paying attention to LINES.  Here’s what I came up with…

This one is my favorite – the banister in our upstairs hallway.  I like it best in black & white, because it really pulls out the texture and grain of the wood. Plus, I think the highlights and shadows are interesting…

week4a__0012

Next – laundry of course!  Getting close-up, I realized that I’ve never noticed that the basket isn’t really smooth… but I like the contrast of the smooth(ish) basket with the lumpy laundry poking through…

week4a__0017

Finally, the blinds on our sliding glass door. Again, I like black and white because the color version had some distracting variations caused by the brown grass and grey snow outside.  I also tried this one more close-up, but the texture of the individual slats was distracting from the overall flow of the lines in the image…

week4a__0007It’s interesting how often I think back to my first photography course in college (B&W film and darkroom stuff – fun times, thanks to Bob Siebrecht!) especially while I’m doing these assignments.  Although I had enjoyed photography for many years already, that class taught me some very important basic lessons that I still lean on every day that I pick up my camera.  I guess I am using my college education after all!  :-)

February 26, 2010 - 10:40 am Holly - I don't think I knew that you took Bob's class too! I probably knew at some point, but totally forgot. Sweet!

sweet newborn “pick”tures… | mahomet newborn photographer

February 26, 2010 - 2:55 pm Diane - Love the pictures! The picture of "the men" is very special.
