develop on fridays :: week 4+ | champaign-urbana photographer

As I mentioned last week, the official develop: on fridays group is now posting assignments every other week, so on the “off-weeks” I’m making up my own bonus assignments to keep the creative juices flowing!  And who knows… maybe I’ll even think up something that “officially” gets assigned later on – and then I’ll have my homework done early, right? Maybe…

So, the assignment for week 4+  :  continue looking at mundane objects in interesting ways… specifically paying attention to LINES.  Here’s what I came up with…

This one is my favorite – the banister in our upstairs hallway.  I like it best in black & white, because it really pulls out the texture and grain of the wood. Plus, I think the highlights and shadows are interesting…

Next – laundry of course!  Getting close-up, I realized that I’ve never noticed that the basket isn’t really smooth… but I like the contrast of the smooth(ish) basket with the lumpy laundry poking through…

Finally, the blinds on our sliding glass door. Again, I like black and white because the color version had some distracting variations caused by the brown grass and grey snow outside.  I also tried this one more close-up, but the texture of the individual slats was distracting from the overall flow of the lines in the image…

week4a__0007It’s interesting how often I think back to my first photography course in college (B&W film and darkroom stuff – fun times, thanks to Bob Siebrecht!) especially while I’m doing these assignments.  Although I had enjoyed photography for many years already, that class taught me some very important basic lessons that I still lean on every day that I pick up my camera.  I guess I am using my college education after all!  🙂

    Holly - I don’t think I knew that you took Bob’s class too! I probably knew at some point, but totally forgot. Sweet!
